Charito Ramirez
Read More

The Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment (Ministerie van Sociale Zaken en Werkgelegenheid or SZW for short) published in January 2009 the Tagalog translation of an important brochure relevant to many Pilipinos employed under exploitative conditions in the Netherlands.

This brochure is entitled “Exploitation at the Workplace” (“Hinggil sa Trabaho at Pagsasamantala” translated by the author).
Profile: Early in life, Defense Secretary Gilberto “Gilbert” Cojuangco Teodoro, Jr., already showed the makings of a leader and public servant. In his youth, he was elected President of the then Kabataang Barangay for Central Luzon and later, member of the Sanguniang Panlalawigan of Tarlac from 1980 to 1986.

After completing his primary education at the Xavier School, he then pursued his secondary studies at the same school as he also dabbled his involvement in political offices and organizations....

Officers and members of the Makati Business Club, Your Excellencies of the diplomatic corps, ladies and gentlemen, my friends and countrymen. Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to address you.

Spoliarium is the masterpiece that won gold medal in the 1884 National Exposition of Fine Arts in Madrid, Spain. The silver medal award went to another Filipino, Felix Ressureccion Hidalgo. Because of the unprecedented significance of the event where two Filipino painters were awarded medals and accolades there is every reason to celebrate. And rightfully, a celebration was called for the gathering of Filipino patriots and propagandists with the presence of invited guests mostly, Spanish liberals and members of the Freemasonry who showed support and sympathy to the Philippine Reform Movement. Dr. Jose Rizal was there to deliver such an important and memorable speech saying that: “Genius has no country, genius burst forth everywhere and genius is like light and air – the patrimony of all”...

LIFE, LOVE AND MARRIAGE
Rene Calalang
Scarborough, Ontario
February 7, 2010

Marriage is the union of two people deeply in love, mostly a man and a woman; two people committed with the same noble purpose to be together for the rest of their lives; two people whose sincere affection for each other know no limits and see no boundaries; two people, some of which have two different background and yet no differences in background are so big and so strong to affect the relationship.

Marriage works if there is love, if there is honesty, if there is sincerity and if there is understanding to guide it. It is shown by a long and sincere relationship, unmindful of others....

The Last Tribes of Mindanao, the Bilaan of Southern Mindanao
The Netherlands
February 4, 2010

The Bilaan or B`laan are a tribal community of Southern Mindanao, the name of this indigenous group comes from the words Bla and An, meaning Opponent People. The Bilaans in South Cotabato were renowned hunters and food gatherers, they hunted wild animals and were reaping grains, rootcrops, fruits and herbs in the once vast open space of cogonal land, known as Kolon Datal, nowadays Koronadal City.

The Bilaan live in in Lake Sebu and other municipalities of South Cotabato and are one of the major non-Islamic tribal groups in the Southern Philippines. They are famous for their rich and colorful cultural heritage, ethnic art and handcrafts like the brass ornaments and traditional beadwork....

Up and Down the California Coast in 7 Days, from the Ancient Redwood Forests to the Birthplace of the Golden State
January 31, 2010

The morning was chilly but clear as I drove from my house in Orange County, California to my brother Boy’s (Orestes) house in Los Angeles County. There, I met the rest of our small tour group – Boy, his wife Teng (Estella), my brother Jun, his wife Iou, and our special guests from the Netherlands for the holidays, my sister Quiding and her husband Eddie. We were going to San Francisco in a rented van, after celebrating Christmas 2009 in Boy and Teng’s house the previous day. I have lived in California for over three decades, but this was the first time that I would tour the Golden State north to Eureka towards the Oregon border, then south to San Diego near the Mexican border.

The drive to San Francisco was uneventful but pleasant until we reached the outskirts of the city where heavy downpour greeted us. We worried a bit that Eddie’s first visit to this charming city by the bay would be marred by inclement weather. But after breakfast at the hotel the following day, the sun started to shine through the quintessential San Francisco morning fog as we headed to Twin Peaks. The two hills of Twin Peaks gave us a panoramic view of the city through the thinning fog and mist....

The e-jeepney: To get around Makati fast, quiet and cheap!
Manila
February 2, 2010

At 8 pesos a jeepney ride from the corner of Jupiter along Makati Avenue to Landmark transportation in the city of Makati could be a profitable deal. Taxi drivers love Makati for its lazy-to-walk passengers who take a 40 pesos ride and leave 50 pesos, a very ample tip. They start the next passenger at the meter count of 30 pesos. And this frequency piles up at the end of the day. A hundred short rides give a better return than 10 long ones in bad traffic.

But now the e-jeepney. This may be old hat to Makati residents, but it is new and refreshing to Makati visitors. Mayor Jojo Binay (see box) last November started two short e-jeepney routes serving two major residential routes, one circling Salcedo Village (Makati Ave, Citibank, HV de la Costa), the other going through Legaspi Village (Landmark, Makati Med and De la Rosa). The jeeps are electrically powered and run silently and smoothly down the streets – no smoke belching!...

A Respite in the Princely Liechtenstein
The Netherlands
January 31, 2010

Kingdoms are sometimes realities. They do not remain as dreams of children. Kingdoms have castles and monarchs, beautiful landscapes, picturesque hills and mountains, peaceful and quite small to be manageable. Such a reality exists in the picture-perfect Principality of Liechtenstein.

A drive further to the east of Switzerland is this small princely state of 35,000 Liechtensteiners. It is a landlocked country bounded to the east by Austria. With an area of 160 square kilometres it ranks 218 out of 249 countries and territories in terms of land area. That is a small feat to drive around. It’s the mountains that make one’s tour around longer because of winding roads. Sometimes you’ll get lost too when you go to narrower and inner passages....

Community Radio in Asia, the david among the goliaths
The Netherlands
January 22, 2010

In broadcast sophisticated Asia, community radio is almost a total anomaly. What could possibly be the function of 100-watt transmitters in isolated rural, mainly traditional areas of this modern continent, now raging in its dragon economy? What is their role in the face of the emissions of NHK Japan, CCTV China, Radio Indonesia, RTM or even CNN, Aljazeera and other round-the-clock, round-the-globe sources? Why write a book about it?

Because it happened.

As far back as 1980, with the financial assistance of UNESCO and Danida (Danish International Development Agency), community radio was established in Sri Lanka. The government in those days had made a final and long term decision to turn the nationwide Mahaweli River system into an economic powerhouse to spur development at local and national levels....

A family visit with Siony, Naty and Carmen, the grand nieces of José Rizal

“Magandang umaga po, maaari po ba kaming umakyat?”

All are the grand nieces of José Rizal, grand daughters of his elder sister, Narcisa.”

I felt honored to be welcomed into the home of these three elegant ladies, the last vestige of a long gone era of heroism and national ardor. When they heard I was coming to visit, they even proposed to wear their old Filipina gowns with the large balintawak shoulders. But this was not possible, everything was burned in the family home last November 2009....

Our Pilgrimage to the Holy Land

January 14, 2010

Israel-November 9-18, 2007: Wonderful, breath taking, hard to explain, the mix feelings that engulfed my whole being, when for the first time I set my eyes on the Holy places where Jesus our Lord left His mark. I thought I was travelling back in time 2000 years ago in the time of Jesus, this was made possible by the Jews, scholars, archaeologists, who worked very hard to preserve the structures. Some already broken into pieces, they worked carefully and skillfully to restore them to its original state.

Miraculously, the Holy Bible seemed to come to life, touching every limb of my body, heart and soul, for like in His time, I felt His presence in the various places {mountains, river, lake, etc.} that He spent His life with His disciples and many people that followed Him....

Rizal, the hero of Dapitan
The Netherlands
January 12, 2010

(Dapitan, 28 December 2009) The landing of Rizal in Dapitan is as contradictory as its presentation in bronze sculpture. It is the newest monument to the national hero, scheduled to be inaugurated later today by the President of the Republic of the Philippines, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, on the very shores of the island of Dapitan, actually a long, narrow sandbar fronting the city proper, then a military outpost in the wilds of the ‘great island,’ Mindanao.

He was sent to Dapitan by the Spanish guardia civil, as a traitor for whom they found insufficient evidence to condemn. He arrived as a free man and was escorted by the Commanding General himself to be lodged at his office and residence in town....
