Rizal in Paris
One stop on Rizal’s Heritage Trail in Europe

For many Filipinos living abroad, one does not always have easy access to centres of learning or programmes that teach us about our history and culture. Opting for work abroad often means cutting the umbilical cord of cultural nourishment.

That is why the Philippines Chaplaincy, the Order of the Knights of Rizal and the Philippine French Cultural Association conceived the idea of organising a series of lectures on the national hero, Dr José Rizal. A good part of this idea originated some eleven years ago during the Centennial of the Philippine Republic, when the Centennial Committee, formed by HE Ambassador Rora Navarro Tolentino prepared the first tour of sites in Paris visited by Rizal. M Bernard Pot and Ms Maria Pilar-Magannon were members of that Committee and their original papers are still extant. M Pot went on further to study Philippine Nationalism and its origins ; the daughter of Ms Magannon, Héloïse Magannon Brucelas studied the writings of Rizal for her Masters degree in Paris. Mme Hélène Goujat pursued doctoral studies, also on the life of Rizal.

The combined intellectual resources of these scholars are now presented to the public in the first international conference on José Rizal : Rizal Confronts the Youth of Today. The themes are all based on Rizal’s life and his works. These studies also form an additional source of knowledge and deeper insights concerning the influence of European culture and philosophy on Rizal’s thinking, as the national hero visited France, Germany, Austria andEngland several times.

These visits now form the larger heritage of the trail Rizal followed in Europe as a whole. This is an idea originated by Sir Celso Lacuna, KGOR, co-founder and former Commander of the Berlin Chapter of the Knights.

We invite all university students and those curious about these aspects of our culture to join us in this conference.

Details are in the attached poster.

Sir Eddie

Thanks for your very positive comments. Bring one of the lecturers to Prague? Good idea. I will discuss how to do this, that is financially!!!! Right now we are trying to edit from the film track and make 1) a recap of the highlights on DVD; and 2) an almost 'verbatim' of the orations. Perhaps, to be practical, we could focus on the recap and try to have that ready for Prague. Thanks for your good ideas. And I did enjoy my stay with your knights in Orlando at the last US Regional assembly.

I'm green with envy! Our European brethrens are lucky to have within their midst such knowledgeable and learned lecturers and academicians who can share thier scholarly insights about our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal.

I for one would love to hear them but unfortunately there's a big pond "Atlantic ocean" that separates us but could it be possible that the KOR European Region invite at least one of these reknowned Rizalist scholars to the upcoming KOR European Regional Assembly? If this is not possible, can they have copies of their lectures/presentations made available to the KOR delegates at the Assembly or at the very least, can someone send me the excerpts? I would like to share that with our fellow KR's here in Florida and beyond.

Thank you for your consideration of this request.
