ESSEN - 2010 Cultural Capital of Europe
112th Philippine Independence Day Celebration
June 12-13, 2010

Dear Sirs/ Mesdames,,
I would like to inform your association that Essen, located in the central part of North Rhine-Westphalia, has been elected as the Cultural Capital of Europe in 2010. North Rhine-Westphalia is the most populated state of Filipino residents in Germany.
In this context, we will be celebrating the 112th Philippine Independence Commemoration on June 12 – 13, 2010 at Altesstrandbad in Essen-Werden, 45239 Essen.
This will be the biggest celebration of Philippine Independence in Germany. We are expecting about 6.000 – 10.000 thousand Filipinos/ visitors from all parts of Germany to this affair.
The objectives of this festivity is to create awareness of the Philippine culture and raise funds for charity projects in the Philippines.
The highlights of said affair will be the following:
Presentation/ Philippine live-cooking / demonstration of Philippine food and drinks
(between 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on both days June 12-13)
Special cultural presentations/ shows
(amongst others, a known choir and dance troupe from the Philippines)
The famous Santa Cruzan Parade and mass
Varieties of entertainment
(famous singers/actors from the Philippines)
Drawing of tombola/raffle
1st prize: 2 tickets-Germany-Philippines-Germany
2nd Prize: 1 ticket Germany-Philippines-Germany
3rd Prize: 1 ticket Germany-Philippines-Germany
And
1 ticket Germany-Philippines-Germany to the Seller of winning 1st prize tombola raffle
And
Many valuable consolation prizes
In this regard we motivate you to join this huge affair. We can provide you with one (1) ‘open spot’ where you can build up a tent (for details see attached participation form). The tent should help you to perpetuate, educate and share the Filipino culture and heritage with the visitors by showing Philippine crafts, landmarks of a province, literature, music, goods and selling Filipino food, etc. Your proceeds will of course be yours for your own fund-raising.
Any form of participation in the cultural shows above (performing phil. dances, songs, etc.) is highly esteemed as well but will have to be approved by the committee.

Whether or not it’s a fig, laurel or cloverleaf that is covering the model’s private parts when we look at the Oblation in front of the UP Administration building in Diliman or whether or not it was Tolentino’s student Anastacio Caedo or Fernando Poe Sr. who probably posed as model is immaterial.

When we relate to other people, it is but natural to adapt different versions of yourself. One cannot openly say “ P*tang Ina” in front of one’s mother, or it would be quite unnatural to greet a peer by making “mano po”. With the collection of letters that Rizal exchanged, different aspects of his personality come out. Rizal kept all the letters that he received because “through them he wanted to study the character, temperament, transformation, and intellectual tendencies of his friends and countrymen” (Viola 324). So we do the same now to him.
In a letter, addressed to Trinidad Rizal, Rizal fits into the role of “Kuya”. He tells of his adventures in Germany and his impression of German women who are not afraid of men and are more concerned with substance than with appearances. So like any kuya, he encourages Trining to form the habit of studying, so as to adorn herself with substance. He ends the letter asking her to write him back in Spanish....

THE TALANGKAMost Filipinos are familiar with the derogatory term " talangka mentality ", meaning taking the short cut route of climbing to the top at the expense of others just like the perceived obnoxious habit of the talangka clambering over other talangka to reach to the top. Only a few people realize that the small crabs do not intentionally step on the other talangka. It is due to their instinct of trying to stay alive, or because of the urge of self preservation , that they try to escape among the hordes of other talangka whether in a bucket or on a river bank....

Update Issue - February, 2008NAGBABAGONG KLIMA SA PILIPINAS, nitong nakaraang dalawang buwan nagsisidaing ang mga naninirahan sa Baguio dahil sa tindi ng ginaw, 8-sentigrado. Di pa umano sila nakadanas ng pangangatog sa ginaw. Dahil hindi naman nangyayari ito, walang central heating ang mga bahay. Suot daw nila ay patong-patong at nakabalabal ng makapal.
Naitanong namin sa sarili, paano na lang yong mga taga Cordillera na hubad ang kalahati ng katawan at nakatapak. Sinasabing magtatagal pa itong lamig....

May I also inform you I have kept past issues of Munting Nayon and have used them several times to answer some questions of our kababayans. I am happy that your column is now available on the Munting Nayon website.
Last month, I was finally confronted just like others who have experienced it before me to send emergency money for my mother who was sick and had to be hospitalized for pneumonia. My sister called me in the middle of the night (7:00 AM Philippines time) to tell me to send urgent money to be used ......
