White Christmas? In Winter Wonderland…The Netherlands !!

For the first time in years…most part of Europe, notably Netherlands are experiencing freezing temperatures (minus 10 to minus 15 degress Centigrade) since December 18.

2 days of snowfall have blanketed the whole country with 10-15 cm of powdery snow…transforming the whole country into a Winter Wonderland!!

It was a nightmare for motorists and commuters…with disrupted public transport schedules and slippery roads causing traffic jams and accidents along the motorways.

But for many, it was a time of fun in the snow…a feeling of excitement catching their first snowflakes … making their first snowman….and hoping…, in 3 days time….to have a dream-come-true.. …. Dreaming of a White Christmas.!!

I lived in Eindhoven in the early part of 1970's. Once I saw snow dusting but never that much. Anyway we just had 12 inches of snow in NJ & made everybody's life miserable specially if you are going to work. This is just to make a comment. I think snow is soo pretty to look at.

The beautiful and picturesque blanket of white snow indeed transformed
the netherlands into a winter wonderland.
My balcony is still swathed in snow.

No other event in the Filipino community of The Netherlands can aptly be tagged as THE event of the year…more than The Philippine Independence Day Picnic.

THE picnic that began in 1988 became the community’s biggest annual reunion and showcase of Philippine culture, and for 20 years until 2008, organized by THE COALITION.

Philippine Independence Day Celebration: The Beginning and How it all started
1960s – Mid-80s

During the late 60s, the practice, following protocol, was to give only a reception for members of the diplomatic corps in celebration of Philippine Independence Day, with Ambassador Eduardo Quintero, then Philippine’s envoy to the Netherlands. Filipinos and Dutch friends and businessmen were invited by the ambassador to his home on that occasion. It was a small Community then, comprising mostly of scholars, around five Filipinas married to Dutch and a small group of nurses....

The JUBILEUM PICNIC , in celebration of 110th Anniversary of Philippine Independence, was another great milestone of the Filipino community in The Netherlands.

The organizer of the event, The COALITION consisting of Barangay sa Holland, Samahan of the Netherlands and United Filipino Dutch Association as member organizations, truly delivered its promise to make Picnic 2008 the best ever…being the 20th annual Indepedence Day Picnic held since the Picnic began in June 1988.

Based on 1200 cars/vans that passed the gate and at least 150 cars that parked outside the picnic area…. plus those who came by public transport…a record breaking attendance of approximately 7000 picnickers came to join the celebration at the sprawling Evenement Terrain of Spaarnwoude Park, coming from all corners ......

The Knights of Rizal, bearing the Philippine flags, led off a special parade starting from Place Trocadero in the 16th district of Paris, and marched down Avenue Georges Mandel towards the Stade de la Muette which fronts the Bois de Boulogne....

The Mediterranean has always been a source of wonder to us. Last May, we could not resist joining a cruise that will sail from Savona (Italy) to Ajaccio (Corsica), Tunis; La Valletta (Malta), and Naples (Italy)…with 17-deck cruise ship Costa Magica, a 102,587 Ton ship built in 2004 with 1027 crew members (mostly Filipinos) and passenger capacity of 2672.

We persuaded a friend of the old days Pat Adolfo and her husband Dick Koorn to take the cruise with us. After checking their schedule, Dick booked a cabin with a view of the sea. For Pat and me it a journey through time, from 47 years back when we were still young and starting our work in the foreign service....

When we relate to other people, it is but natural to adapt different versions of yourself. One cannot openly say “ P*tang Ina” in front of one’s mother, or it would be quite unnatural to greet a peer by making “mano po”. With the collection of letters that Rizal exchanged, different aspects of his personality come out. Rizal kept all the letters that he received because “through them he wanted to study the character, temperament, transformation, and intellectual tendencies of his friends and countrymen” (Viola 324). So we do the same now to him.

In a letter, addressed to Trinidad Rizal, Rizal fits into the role of “Kuya”. He tells of his adventures in Germany and his impression of German women who are not afraid of men and are more concerned with substance than with appearances. So like any kuya, he encourages Trining to form the habit of studying, so as to adorn herself with substance. He ends the letter asking her to write him back in Spanish....

MERRY CHRISTMASNo one can deny that Christ Jesus is the reason for the season of CHRISTMAS that is why it is called CHRISTmas. It is his birth some two thousand years ago in Bethlehem that we are celebrating today. Sometime ago, people in their perceived hurried and busy life started to shorten Christmas to Xmas. Merry Xmas became in vogue in lieu of the original and longer Merry Christmas mostly in nonformal print and written media. But to think of it, X in Xmas does not mean an unknown entity or quantity like the X in Xray discovered by Roentgen rather it is the first letter of Christos, the Greek X or CHI and thus X in Xmas is the abbreviation for Christ. So it is still alright however in recent years of modern commercialism and political correctness, Merry Christmas or its short form of Xmas is being phased out altogether in the corporate and commercial greetings with Happy Holidays and/or Seasons Greetings....

Update Issue - February, 2008NAGBABAGONG KLIMA SA PILIPINAS, nitong nakaraang dalawang buwan nagsisidaing ang mga naninirahan sa Baguio dahil sa tindi ng ginaw, 8-sentigrado. Di pa umano sila nakadanas ng pangangatog sa ginaw. Dahil hindi naman nangyayari ito, walang central heating ang mga bahay. Suot daw nila ay patong-patong at nakabalabal ng makapal.

Naitanong namin sa sarili, paano na lang yong mga taga Cordillera na hubad ang kalahati ng katawan at nakatapak. Sinasabing magtatagal pa itong lamig....
