IGOROTS in VANCOUVER JOIN NATIONAL ABORIGINAL DAY (NAD)
Vancouver – Canada
June 25, 2009

For the first time since its inception 14 years ago, the National Aboriginal Day (NAD) in Vancouver was participated in by members of the BIBAK organization. The 2-day affair which was held last June 20 and 21 in front of the Vancouver Gallery, was a showcase and celebration of First Nations culture and history.

Through the Elalay which is an indigenous song from the Cordilleras, the impassioned greetings of Dr. Chandu Claver, and the lively playing of the gangsas, the BIBAK members and other individuals from the Filipino community gave their message of solidarity and friendship to the First Nations of Canada.

We are the Igorots. We come from the northern of the Philippines – which is an archipelago in South East Asia. We come from the verdant and resource-rich mountains of the Gran Cordillera Mountain Range. Igorot is a collective name representing over a million people from five major tribes or etnolinguistic groups in the Cordillera – the Ibaloys and the Ifugaos in the south, the Yapayaos from the north, the Isnegs in the west, and the Kankanaey and Kalinga tribes in the Central Cordillera.

We have managed to exist as a distinct people with our distinct language and dialects, our distinct culture, and distinct claim to our ancestral lands. We have resisted and survived three hundred and fifty harsh years of Spanish attempts to colonize us. And we have barely survived another fifty years of attempts by the American colonizing power to assimilate us into mainstream Western culture.

Because of this history, we are indigenous peoples, we are aboriginal – like you.

Like the indigenous peoples of Canada, we have nurtured our ancestral land and Mother Earth with our hands, our sweat, and our blood.

Like your people, the Igorots have resisted and defended their land from the State and the Corporations – entities who seem to have a hard time understanding that when their giant machines trample our lands, they are actually taking away our life as a people.

Like your people, the Igorots have suffered through the years from neglect and discriminations – evils that are only being started to be addressed not because of an enlightened State but mainly because of the sustained militancy of the indigenous peoples for their rights.

Like your people, a growing number of our people who have been active in the struggle for indigenous peoples rights have been killed by State agents, and in a recent case, abducted and never to be seen again.

And so we, the Igorots of the Northern Philippines, are no different from you. Nor are we, the indigenous peoples of Canada and the Philippines, different from the other indigenous peoples all around the world. We share a similar history and heritage. We share the same life-threatening problems. But most of all, we share the same hopes and aspirations for our people.

Today, we are here to express our solidarity with you, and with your struggles. As a sign of our solidarity, we would like to give you a short and modest presentation of the various aspects of our cultural life

Haggiye....

At long last..... I found this site where we can at least share and get in contact with our fellow Igorots.
To see and read what others are doing in other countries. Looking at the photos and reading messages like Dr Chandu Claver, it makes us proud of our heritage and as an Igorot.

It also reminds us that when we are away from home it is important that we still get in touch. To share our food dances, songs and culture. This helps us to always remember and be proud where we come from. Our children who are born and bred all over the world needs to be reminded of this very unique heritage. They must be taught of our culture.

I am now finalising my trip to Canada to attend the IGO confence in August 2010.

I am planning to stay in a Hostel in the Main Street, Vancouver. If anyone is reading this and planning the same thing then perhaps we can make a group and meet there.

Participating in these activities continue to strengthen solidarity among Indigenous peoples. May we the Igorots continue to organize and promote our identity as a people.

Long Live the IGOROTS in Canada and Keep-On-Going for our Good Standing,as in our Culture and Traditions and show to the World who we are... remember the Name:IGOROT!!!
The Igorot men should always bring or be in their G-String when ever they are performing a true Igorot presentation, that shows cleverness of our Ancestors... never mind the cold in Canada;Hope to hear from you all, this coming IIC.
