111th ANNIVERSARY OF PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE COMMEMORATED IN WEEK-LONG CELEBRATIONS IN BERLIN

The following traditional rites and activities to celebrate the 111th Anniversary of the Declaration of Philippine Independence were undertaken by the Philippine Embassy in Berlin:

a. Flag Raising at the Embassy Social Hall “Bulwagang Bagumbayan” attended by the Philippine Embassy personnel and leaders of the Philippine community in Berlin.

The Official messages of the President and the Secretary of Foreign Affairs were read and the Ambassador addressed the community relating to the implementation of the government’s rationalization programme which involved the closure of Bonn and Hamburg and the opening of the Frankfurt Consulate in order to optimize use of government funds. Breakfast with the Community followed the official programme.


b. Independence Day reception on 18 June 2009 organized by the Embassy held at the Urania, a popular forum for cultural events

A visual art exhibit of five (5) Filipino artists was opened followed by a performance of the 26-member Filipino chorale group, Kammerchor. The Ambassador addressed the nearly 250 guests from the diplomatic corps, government offices and Filipino community highlighting the role of Berlin’s liberal tradition on the life of Dr. Jose Rizal who finished and published his political novel “Noli Me Tangere” in Germany in 1887.

Guests for the reception included not only officials and diplomats but also personalities in culture and industry as well as the local contacts such as firemen and police officers.

c. To continue the celebrations, the Philippine Community in Berlin organized a ‘Santacruzan’ with benefit concert on the evening of 20 June 2009, which was followed by an art exhibition opened on 21 June 2009.
