SLCBO’s Western Union Cup – Invitational Basketball Tournament kicks off
June 19, 2012

New Senaya, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – With this year’s theme, ‘Enhancing the Unity, Camaraderie & Sportsmanship,’ The Saudi Lighting Company Basketball Organization (SLCBO) in cooperation with Western Union finally kicks off the “Western Union Cup: GLC Inter-Department & Invitational Basketball Tournament”  last June 14, 2012 held at the Saudi Lighting Villa Basketball Court, 2nd Industrial Area, New Senaya  in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Accordingly, the much-awaited Invitational Basketball Tournament was temporarily shelved for a year due to the change in its Management.

Gene Condenato, one of the Organizing Committee, in interview said, “I am very ecstatic that finally, this invitational tournament has paved its way to success. This is because of the continued support of the Management of General Lightning Company to the Filipino Community; especially to the CEO, Engr. Fahad Al Hoyayb and COO, Engr. Mansoor Al Hoyayb.”

And as a new start, this time, it became bigger and wider dubbed as ‘The 2012 Season.’

“The Inter-Department is a yearly activity for OFWs here in Industrial Area thru the efforts of Saudi Lightning Company Basketball Organization but, today’s game; we combined the Inter-Department and Invitational to give chance to other companies who showed interest in joining our tournament,” Condenato added.

20 of the equally energetic and determined teams, representing their companies wore colorful uniforms as they paraded at the SLV Basketball Court. In the end, it was SLC Engineering and RASSAS Teams who won the most-coveted award, the Best in Uniform.

It was Yuletide season, a good time for another family reunion in the Philippines.  We celebrated Christmas Eve at my brother Danny and his wife Cindy’s house.  Cindy’s sisters Annie and Bettina hosted Christmas lunch.  Our holiday meals were both delightful and generous.  It was time for some physical vacation activities.  Our destination – Coron in the province of Palawan.

Coron is remote.  We took three modes of transportation to get there - by air, land and sea.  Our big family tour group flew from Manila to Busuanga Island just north of the island of Palawan, then rode two vans through hills and dirt roads, before taking two motor boats to reach our secluded vacation hideaway by the beach.  The skillful boatmen waded and pushed the two small crafts as we passed through shallow waters between mangroves.

Experienced painters are often confronted with the problem of what to do with their early works whose originally unnoticed flaws have become more obvious with the passage of time.

Some professionals suggest the slash-and-burn option which consists in carrying out literally what the words mean. One should get rid of anything that could blot one's otherwise brilliant portfolio. Some artists already held in high esteem find this a sensible solution to avoid damage to their reputation or a plunge in their market-value. But, in this age when the dividing line between mediocrity and excellence in art appears to be non-existent, this suggestion seems extreme.

The majority, of course, recommend keeping them as is. One should not be ashamed of one's humble beginnings. If anything, early works are testaments to the artist's hard-fought struggles to achieve perfection or fitting preludes to a story with a happy ending. This is fine as long as one is willing to be reminded constantly of one's previous mistakes.
