Two of Callaghan’s photos at the SVB-Amstelveen GRID 2012 Photo Exhibition (MN June 21, 2012)
The exhibition, as described in GRID 2012 brochure: This is a series of photographs by Frank Callaghan made over a two-year period between 2008 and 2009 in Manila-Philippines. Much of the subject matter consists of informal structures built in the gaps between more formally conceived spaces. What is not obvious is that almost all of the scenes were shot in one of the city’s most affluent areas-the financial capital-Makati…. … Impossibly beautiful, these images give importance to the forgotten and ignored aspects of the everyday (urban) landscape. However, despite the highly saturated color and eerie light sources, the artist uses only the most minimal amount of processing. Through long exposures, he amplifies the available light in very dark places but keeps the original colors and shadows.”
Excerpt from Frank Callaghan (GRID 2012 brochure) Intro statement: “ In the series from which I chose these entries, I found myself drawn to the quiet, empty spaces of urban fringes at night and to the unintentional beauty of dwellings that seem to have grown organically out of the city……”
5TH GRID 2012 runs from May 16 – July 1, 2012 (www.gridphotofestival.com )
