EMBRACING LIFE, CARING FOR THE FAMILY HEARTBEAT!
Ontario-Canada
July 3, 2012

What can a group of live-in caregivers put together that will help them and other caregivers to negotiate their care giving years with zest, energy and self-assurance? With limited time, resources and circles of influence, what possibilities are there for them to connect with other caregivers to build a strong sense of community belonging, of being valued, so needed by newcomers striving to make their host country, their new homeland? Live-in caregivers embrace life, caring for the heartbeat of three families all at once: their family of origin, their own family in the making and the family of their employer.

A multi-cultural group of welcoming, inclusive and supportive advocates formed CARERS ARK in the GTA in 2010. Presently, Carers Ark, is a registered CRA charitable organization and listed as an Archdiocese of Toronto Lay Association partner, that attends to such needs by facilitating the CA Tripod workshops and connecting caregivers to community networks, to plan activities and events. Such events positively influence their interactions with their employers’ families, bringing an energizing at-homeness and serenity in their daily work .

One such event is being planned by a group of Carers ARK Scarborough and Markham volunteers. Themed “CARERS NIGHT – LINK-LAUGH-LEARN-LOVE” the evening event will take place on July 14th, Saturday, at the St. Thomas More Parish Hall in Scarborough. Carers Ark members from the area,  Jimmy Nagallo, Cora Palomares and Cielito Parone work with a caregiver team coordinated by Tess Lorenzo. They learn the skills of events administration, marketing and financial management and most of all, of inviting caregivers who are as yet without meaningful connections in the city.

Activities planned for the evening include two learning presentations, an inspirational message, dance and song numbers and Zumba dancing. Two notable speakers will deal with CIC immigration issues and helpful tips on how to relate and fit into the Canadian workforce as caregivers prepare to transition to the work that matches their skills and preparation. MP Roxanne James of Scarborough is a member of the Standing Committees on Citizenship and Immigration (CIMM) and on the Status of Women (FEWO). Donna MacMillan has over 20 years’ progressive business experience focusing on Selection and Recruitment. She has worked on the Corporate and Agency side of recruitment and brings a unique perception on helping individuals find the right employment fit.

A professional Photo Booth will be made available in partnership with CAST (Creative Artists Society of Toronto).

Tickets at $20 include the event + dinner + Carers ARK T-shirt.

It was Yuletide season, a good time for another family reunion in the Philippines.  We celebrated Christmas Eve at my brother Danny and his wife Cindy’s house.  Cindy’s sisters Annie and Bettina hosted Christmas lunch.  Our holiday meals were both delightful and generous.  It was time for some physical vacation activities.  Our destination – Coron in the province of Palawan.

Coron is remote.  We took three modes of transportation to get there - by air, land and sea.  Our big family tour group flew from Manila to Busuanga Island just north of the island of Palawan, then rode two vans through hills and dirt roads, before taking two motor boats to reach our secluded vacation hideaway by the beach.  The skillful boatmen waded and pushed the two small crafts as we passed through shallow waters between mangroves.

It is difficult to say what is impossible for the dream of yesterday is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow.  Hope, like faith, is nothing if it is not courageous, it is nothing if it is not ridiculous.  Since the turn of the century industrialization steadily pushed America to the brink of progress and the brim...
