Four-Days Sponsor Walk: Support Kyle in helping orphans in the Philippines
The Netherlands
July 9, 2012

Dear Friends,

On 17-20 July, 15 year old Kyle G. Baleva will join the International Four-Day Marches in Nijmegen. He will join about 45,000 participants and hike 40 kilometers per day for a total of 160 kms in four days.

Kyle will be participating in the 96th edition of the "Walk of the World" in Nijmegen for the 4th time in a row. He seeks sponsors to raise much needed money for orphaned children in the Philippines. The amount collected will buy books and other educational materials, supplement food allowances and some medicines for children who were orphaned because their parents have disappeared or died due to various human rights violations.

The Children's Rehabilitation Center's (CRC) "A Hand for an Orphan" program has been supported through this project for three years now. The CRC gives psycho-social support to children and their families to help them overcome the trauma they have experienced. They also visit different far-flung areas of the country where there are intensive military operations and there are high incidences of human rights violations.

In 2009, the money collected during the walk were able to support six orphans with food and educational allowances for one year. In 2010, the CRC was able to organize a peace camp where 40 orphans aged 3 to 16 were able to take part in. Last year (2011), the CRC was not only able to support some very basic needs of 6 young orphans, they were also able to organize another peace camp with about 100 participants coming from different parts of the country. Every year, Kyle trains hard to participate in the "Vierdaagse Nijmegen" because through these efforts, he wishes to give more orphans more opportunities for healing.

Would you like to help Kyle help other children? You can:

> donate 10 Euros per day (40 Euros for 4 days) OR
> donate a fixed amount

It was Yuletide season, a good time for another family reunion in the Philippines.  We celebrated Christmas Eve at my brother Danny and his wife Cindy’s house.  Cindy’s sisters Annie and Bettina hosted Christmas lunch.  Our holiday meals were both delightful and generous.  It was time for some physical vacation activities.  Our destination – Coron in the province of Palawan.

Coron is remote.  We took three modes of transportation to get there - by air, land and sea.  Our big family tour group flew from Manila to Busuanga Island just north of the island of Palawan, then rode two vans through hills and dirt roads, before taking two motor boats to reach our secluded vacation hideaway by the beach.  The skillful boatmen waded and pushed the two small crafts as we passed through shallow waters between mangroves.

Art books often advice beginners to copy the works of the masters as a way to improve their painting skill. The reason is that one can't paint a good picture until one has seen a good picture. During their formative years, the masters themselves copied from their more advanced peers.

I actually witnessed this copying phenomenon in our visit to the Louvre some years ago. The sight of artists, both novices and professionals, busy with their palettes and brushes was as spectacular as the masterpieces they were trying to replicate.

Great as it may sound, this training methodology, however, is not always possible especially for those of us with no easy access to museums and galleries. But, such working procedure could be approximated using images from art books or other sources as substitutes. It's true, prints of paintings are seldom as excellent as their original, but, for learning purposes, they would do.
