BIRTHDAY PARTY/ CONCERT/FUND-RAISER IN TULSA, OKLAHOMA

Tomas "Tom" Tañada, the world renowned International Pianist and Gentleman of Music, ‘wowed ‘ his audience again and held them breathless in another successful concert, this time in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on the occasion of the advanced 64^th birthday of Mrs. Carmel Francisco, wife of Brig. Gen. Andrew R. Francisco, AFP (Retired).

The fund-raiser concert was held on May 19, 2012 at the beautiful home of their son, Dr. Raphael C. Francisco, a practicing endocrinologist in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The very kind-hearted Tom offered to do the concert for free just to be able to help the couple raise funds for their favorite charity in the Philippines, the San Jose Major Seminary in Ateneo de Manila University, Quezon City, Philippines.

The very formal affair was very successful and well-attended with around seventy guests in attendance coming from Colorado, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Our sincere and heartfelt thanks to Tom for coming to Tulsa, Oklahoma (By the way, it was his first time.) despite his busy schedule and most especially to Cindy for being so gracious and understanding.

It was Yuletide season, a good time for another family reunion in the Philippines. We celebrated Christmas Eve at my brother Danny and his wife Cindy’s house. Cindy’s sisters Annie and Bettina hosted Christmas lunch. Our holiday meals were both delightful and generous. It was time for some physical vacation activities. Our destination – Coron in the province of Palawan.

Coron is remote. We took three modes of transportation to get there - by air, land and sea. Our big family tour group flew from Manila to Busuanga Island just north of the island of Palawan, then rode two vans through hills and dirt roads, before taking two motor boats to reach our secluded vacation hideaway by the beach. The skillful boatmen waded and pushed the two small crafts as we passed through shallow waters between mangroves.

This was the first time I painted from life. Sort of, that is.

My still life paintings had always been from pictures or imagination. Setting up arrangements were simply too cumbersome for me especially when perishable goods that couldn't last the duration of the painting process were involved.

But now, with digital cameras, setups do not need to be physically infront of the painter; photographs of them will suffice. Painting from an image displayed on a desktop screen, tablet or smartphone is as good as painting from life.
