MEGA STAR MS SHARON CUNETA RE-VISITED AUSTRALIA

August 12, 2012

The long running Philippine Entertainment Network owned by couple Nita and Peter Christian brought back the Mega Star & Singer Ms Sharon Cuneta to Sydney after more than 20 years.

Sharon wowed her fans with many of her original songs.

The Mega Concert was held in Evan Theatre, Penrith Panthers Club in Penrith, N S W on Friday night, 10 August 2012.  Sharon special guest from the Philippines was funny man and dancer Vhong Navarro and hosts of local talents, Madonna Salva, Bernadette Marquezm Hazel Goulson, Mikee de Leon, Marissa Punzalan, Gilda Pagaduan, Chelsea Castillo, Edward Banting and Genesis and young local dancers.

Of course Sharon would not be here without his musical director Mr Louie Ocampo who is her mentor early on, when she was just 13 years old.  For her back-up vocals she had One Voice composed of Tina Ranoso, Bangel and Pam Picart and a local band, which surprised Sharon because whenever she was on tour in the USA, Canada and Middle East, she only have Louie on the piano as her back up.

The Evan Theatre was packed with her adoring fans which made Sharon very happy to see them still wanting to see her and hear her songs even though there are heaps of new and young talents in the Philippines.  The first time she was here, I was privileged to see her, her mum and her very young daughter Casey during the very private cocktail party in her honour.  Sharon voice has not changed, since that first concert here and this last one, it’s like you are hearing her originals from the record, the tape or compact disc that we had collected through the years.

Many came from afar like Canberra, Newcastle, Wagga-Wagga and many more distant places who came in bus loads and have to stay overnight.  Illawarra, where 10 of us came from is more or less two hours one way, thanks to the many freeways that we took. We left at 4 pm on Friday and arrived home at 3 or 4 am on Saturday, depending where one live.

Well the concert started at 8 pm and finished past 11 and there was a long queue of people wanting to have their newly bought compact disc which is digitally remastered be autographed by Sharon and have a photo with her. I was lucky to be close and personal with her when she signed my cd and planted a kiss on her cheek.  Then of course before driving back we have to have coffee, tea and something else with it and left the venue around 2 am.  I am sure by the way the audience reacted after each song that they are enjoying the show, and would want more and would like to be closed to Sharon, shake her hand and give her a kiss.  It was a concert that will live on in our minds for many days to come.

After NSW Sharon and her group will be heading to Brisbane in Queensland for her second concert and after that maybe spend a day in the Gold Coast before heading back home, she was only here in Australia for less than a week due to her many commitments.  But she promised she would like to be back and entertain her Sharonian fans and bask and relax in the country down under, the beautiful Australia.

It was Yuletide season, a good time for another family reunion in the Philippines.  We celebrated Christmas Eve at my brother Danny and his wife Cindy’s house.  Cindy’s sisters Annie and Bettina hosted Christmas lunch.  Our holiday meals were both delightful and generous.  It was time for some physical vacation activities.  Our destination – Coron in the province of Palawan.

Coron is remote.  We took three modes of transportation to get there - by air, land and sea.  Our big family tour group flew from Manila to Busuanga Island just north of the island of Palawan, then rode two vans through hills and dirt roads, before taking two motor boats to reach our secluded vacation hideaway by the beach.  The skillful boatmen waded and pushed the two small crafts as we passed through shallow waters between mangroves.

This still life was painted in 2003 when painting was for me more enthusiasm than expertise. This work was quite acceptable to me then if not perfect in terms of forms and composition. The shells, the main objects of interest and basically orange in color, were set off by a complementary blue atmosphere. The sturdy triangular arrangement bound the various elements into one strong unified whole. The yellow peaches and fruits marked the tips of the triangle that served as an enclosure of where the excitement was concentrated. Very little seemed to be lacking in this creation.

But, looking at it now, I can't resist the urge to inject more vibrant colors and greater atmospheric perspective in what now appears to be a dull and flat composition. Neither can't I help noticing other shortcomings: the lemon peel is too long, the shells lack natural luster, the fruits and leaves are not fresh, and the strong contrast between the warm and cool table draperies grab too much attention. A renovation is certainly needed and is clearly the most logical next step.
