INVITATION TO ALL DEVOTEES OF THE VIRGIN OF PENAFRANCIA

September 15^th, 2012, Saturday, will be the feast day of our Lady of Penafrancia, the Patron Saint of the Bicol Region in the Philippines. The devotees of the Virgin of Penafrancia led by the Bicol Canada Community Association (BCCA), together with the organizers of the 9-day House-to-House Novena, are hosting the celebration starting with the traditional Fluvial Parade at the Bluffers Park Lake at Brimley Rd. in Scarborough, Ontario. The day will be capped by an evening Mass Celebration at the Our of Assumption Church at 2565 Bathurst St. , Toronto.

Bobby Achacon and Jojo Taduran, Treasurer and Vice-President respectively, of the Bicol Canada Community Association Inc. (BCCA) headed by President Paeng Nebres, pay homage and make thanksgiving to Our Lady of Peñafrancia, the Patron Saint of Bicolandia, whom the Bicolanos fondly call Ina. The feast day to be celebrated on September 15th, 2012, Saturday, is preceeded by a novena, nine days of prayer, in honor of the Virgin, will start with a fluvial parade at the Bluffers Park Lake at Brimley Rd. in Scarborough, Ontario.(Romy Zetazate)qz

ACTIVITIES FOR THE DAY:

MORNING CELEBRATION AT THE BLUFFERS PARK AND MARINA

9: 00 AM- Assembly for the procession of the Virgin to the Dock at the Bluffers Park Marina where the Fluvial Parade will start. ( Eastside of the Bluffers Park Marina )

9:30 AM- PROCESSION TO THE DOCK STARTS

10:00 - 11:30 AM - FLUVIAL PARADE ON THE LAKE
Devotions will be celebrated at the park after the Fluvial Parade.
Pot Luck lunch at the Park will follow after the Holy Mass.

EVENING CELEBRATION AT THE LADY OF ASSUMPTION CHURCH

7:00 PM - Starts with a procession of the Virgin of Penafrancia around the church yard.
7:10 PM - Concelebrated Mass with the Our Lady of Penafrancia Choir

After the Holy Mass a Fiesta/Celebration will follow at the Church Hall.

It was Yuletide season, a good time for another family reunion in the Philippines. We celebrated Christmas Eve at my brother Danny and his wife Cindy’s house. Cindy’s sisters Annie and Bettina hosted Christmas lunch. Our holiday meals were both delightful and generous. It was time for some physical vacation activities. Our destination – Coron in the province of Palawan.

Coron is remote. We took three modes of transportation to get there - by air, land and sea. Our big family tour group flew from Manila to Busuanga Island just north of the island of Palawan, then rode two vans through hills and dirt roads, before taking two motor boats to reach our secluded vacation hideaway by the beach. The skillful boatmen waded and pushed the two small crafts as we passed through shallow waters between mangroves.

Sometimes, ideas for a painting come from unexpected places. I was browsing once through the Facebook album of my cousin-in-law when I came across her orchid collection and pictures of a giant crab as big as a placemat.

It immediately hit me that the flowers and the crustacean could become the subject of my next still life painting. I had never painted a crab before and my previous orchids, although looking like orchids, certainly needed to look more like orchids.

I started picturing in my mind all imaginable arrangements involving the two with the crab as the main element and the orchids as supporting cast. When I had chosen a definite composition, I immediately sketched it on a drawing pad and there was nothing that would stop the painting process from then on.
