2010 ANCOP WALK LIGHTS UP DOWNTOWN TORONTO
Toronto-Ontario, Canada
Sat 4th September 2010

With one mind and heart, donors, partners, volunteers and people from all walks of life, trooped to Nathan Philips Square in downtown Toronto to participate the 2010 ANCOP WALK. The scourging heat failed to dampen the blazing passion in the hearts of the people as they walk for a great cause – to build shelter for the poor and to provide quality education to the needy children.

The 2010 Walk started with a program emceed by the great tandem of Sunny Paragas and Chat Bautista followed by a short prayer led by Deacon Alex Masunsong. The Canadian and Philippine national anthems were sung by Vonnie Beltran and Josie de Leon respectively. Ancop President Temi Pangilinan and Mabuhay representative Ben Ferrer welcomed all the walk participants. Our very own Philippine Consul General Minerva Falcon gave a very inspiring speech, rallying walk participants to never get tired of helping the poor. The pre-walk program provided a showcase of talents from the Gonzales Brothers, BLD and Clariz chorale, PIDC group and Vonnie Beltran. Ms. Josie de Leon hyped up the participants with the rendition of “GET ON YOU FEET” while Mirasol Laurel led the warm up exercise

Graft and Corruption, an integral part of Filipino psyche?
Renato Perdon
Sydney-Australia
Sat 4th September 2010

During the last Philippine election campaign, the issue on graft and corruption in the government was over emphasised in the course of national candidates’campaign to attract sympathy from the voting public.

In electoral history of the country, the issue on graft and corruption has always been a consistent argument against the incumbent. In fact, no president, from the time of Roxas, won a second term in office, not until Marcos came, primarily due to the issue of graft and corruption. As the head of the government, the incumbent presidency was maligned and derided for the ‘graft and corruption’ in their administration, while ordinary people suffered and continue to emerse in poverty....

Sympathy for the victims poured, reflections on the tragedy were expressed, the call for justice ruled, and people’s solidarity resounded.

It was supposed to be the 12th anniversary celebration of the Filipino Migrant Workers’ Union (FMWU). But as tragedy struck more than 20 Hong Kong Chinese tourists in what is now known as the Quirino Bloodbath, the FMWU decided to offer the day for the hostage-taking victims and for the Filipino migrant workers and Hong Kong Chinese people to express their sentiments on the condemnable conduct of the Philippine police and government that led to the death of eight hostages and serious trauma to the survivors....

Many of the couple’s friends and relatives from the United States and the Middle East took time out of their work and didn’t mind spending money on airfares to come home and witness the happy ending to a saga that spanned three continents. They were making a pilgrimage to be at one with the couple in the triumphant culmination of their arduous journey.

In your typical Filipino wedding where the bride and groom spend many years working abroad before coming home to make a spectacle of their union before their relatives and friends, there is that “sky is the limit” air to the whole festivity. This is because of the enormous buying power of the potent American Dollar so that every caprice could be indulged....

Ang Bangka
Ven Del Pilar Faundo
Canada
Wed 25th August 2010

The banca, bangka in the vernacular, came in many shapes and sizes. Some were motorized and many were propelled by wooden paddles which were either hand made or machine made. The paddles were provided at the end part a tee for better handling and grip unlike the oars. Some banca were outfitted with bamboo outriggers for better stability although some manueverality was sacrificed. Some boats were painted according to the owners' fancy. Some sported names real and imagined like Hagibis. Darna ( cartoon characters ) Maria Luisa, Linda ( real names ). Our boat was named Capt. Joe Carven, in honor of my twin brothers Jose and Carlos who died in their infancy and the Ven was obviously for me. I even spotted on the prow of a banca a monicker NAHAD -NAHAD I did not know whether it was intentional or not for the real word was DAHAN - DAHAN which meant slow, methodical or slowly -does-it . It caught the peoples' and my attention. Some boats were oufitted with a sail like a moro vinta. I remember my Lolo Taning of Sta. Monica coming home from fishing near the sea on his boat sailing on the river even though he was half asleep and sometimes even full asleep....

Estella migrated to Canada with her family in 2001. Before she left the Philippines, she leased her house in Manila to Chito and Jette for a period of one year renewable for the same period.

Having decided to stay in Canada for good, she called up her Chito and informed him that she is no longer planning to renew the lease as she is in the process of selling the house. Chito then told Estella not offer the house to anybody else as they will buy it themselves at the end of the lease. Estella agreed and said that she will be formalizing everything once she comes back the following year....

PINOY FIESTA 2010-UNANG HIRIT sa TAG-INIT
August 14, 2010
Vancouver, B.C.-Canada
Posted Tue 17th August 2010

The sidewalks of Fraser St. Vancouver were abuzz with the excited exchanges of Filipino-Canadians on that warm, sunny morning of August 14. Families with grandparents, toddlers and  babies in tow, came to participate in or watch “Pinoy Fiesta 2010 Unang Hirit sa Tag-init”, the first Filipino Cultural Street Parade in Vancouver, B.C., Canada.

My nieces and I came early and found a good shady spot to watch the parade. Pretty soon, we heard the familiar rhythm of the Ati-Atihan  drumbeat and the bright, scintillating sound of the xylophone. As the marching band approached us, we discerned the piece to be an upbeat version of Dandansoy-- that well-loved lilting Visayan folk song. At the head of the parade were the images of the Sto. Nino and of Lorenzo Ruiz, the Filipino saint, followed by dancing men and women garbed in various indigenous costumes commonly worn during the Ati-atihan festival in the island of Panay. BIBAK B.C. was also a crowd-pleaser with their colourful attire and gong playing. Representatives from Oriental Mindoro donned flowery costumes and carried banana offerings. And what is a Pinoy fiesta without beauty queens and their consorts?

The last tribes of Mindanao, the Bagobo, the New People
Mon 16th August 2010

Scattered throughout the Southern Philippine Archipelago slowly disappearing tribes untouched by neither time nor colonization still exist in present time. Along the desolate eastern coast of the Davao Gulf, centuries ago, new migrants mixed with the native population, forming a new community that was given the name Bagobo. This tribe traces its origin from the people who brought Hinduism to Mindanao, its name was derived from the words bago meaning new and obo meaning growth. Throughout centuries a strong social structure has enabled these native groups to blend well with the original population, retaining their indigenous customs, beliefs and values.
