Young Pinoy finishes Nijmegen four-day walkathon, draws support for orphans in the Philippines
Nijmegen-The Netherlands
July 23, 2010

Filipino teener Kyle G. Baleva hiked a total of 120 km in four days, successfully finishing the Vierdaagse Nijmegen (Nijmegen International Four-Day Marches) on 23 July for the second year in a row. For his efforts, Kyle received his second official Dutch decoration, the “Vierdaagsekruis” medal, and drew greater attention and support for orphaned children in the Philippines.

Most people join the Vierdaagse Nijmegen just for fun or as a sport. But 13-year old Kyle joins the walkathon for a good cause. He wants to draw people's attention to the plight of children in the Philippines who were orphaned when one or both of their parents were either killed or have disappeared because of their political beliefs.

Land Tour of Italy: Tuscany Region, Rome and Pompeii
June 7 – 13, 2010
Tue 20th July 2010

When the family started discussing a potential tour of Italy last November, I contacted my good friend Luca del Segato immediately. Luca told me three years ago, when he gave us an enlightening tour of Italy’s Lazio region, that he would be very happy to organize a similar tour of Toscana (Tuscany) for us.

Italy is divided into 20 regions, two of which are Lazio and Tuscany. Luca is quite familiar with both regions. He is a native of Acquapendente in the province of Viterbo in Lazio just south of Tuscany. Rome is also in Lazio. It took us a few more months before finally deciding to proceed with the land tour after the Mediterranean cruise that I wrote about in the previous issue of Munting Nayon.( 2010 Mediterranean Cruise:Italy, Croatia, Greece and Montenegro ) With our much delayed decision to proceed with the land tour, I was confident that if anyone could help us realize it, it would be Luca. If you are going on a tour in Italy, check out his website at www.centroitalianlimo.com.

State of the Nation Address of His Excellency President Benigno S. Aquino III
Congress of the Philippines
Session Hall of the House of Representatives
July 26, 2010
Thu 29th July 2010

Speaker Feliciano Belmonte; Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile; Vice President Jejomar Binay; Chief Justice Renato Corona; Former Presidents Fidel Valdez Ramos and Joseph Ejercito Estrada; members of the House of Representatives and the Senate; distinguished members of the diplomatic corps; my fellow workers in government; Mga minamahal kong kababayan: Sa bawat sandali po ng pamamahala ay nahaharap tayo sa isang sangandaan.

GOV'T HAS LONG STRAYED TO THE CROOKED PATH

ISSUE ANALYSIS No. 08, Series of 2010
SONA: TRUTH OR SPECTACLE?
By the Policy Study, Publication and Advocacy Center for People Empowerment in Governance
Tue 27th July 2010

The true state of the nation is in the people who live under the harshest of conditions in the margins of society yet see in collective strength the power to make their lives better. Aquino III says, "We can dream again." Well, he has no sense of history: The people are not just dreaming but struggling, putting their own dreams into action.

The state of the nation address (SONA) is a discourse that mirrors the truth about the country's situation and lays down an agenda for change to be implemented by the President. The nation has heard numerous SONAs but generally these came across as self-serving, rendered in a denial mode with a list of promises remaining unfulfilled. Thus SONAs turned out to be the opposite; instead of inspiring the people they provoke disbelief if not public outrage. Rather than unifying, they promote divisiveness....

If there was one man other than Ferdinand Blumentrtitt who by just delivering an obituary boasted so much credibility on who Rizal was, is no one but this famous German pathologist, world renown anthropologist, public health activist, pathologist, prehistorian, biologist and politician. He is referred to as the "Father of Pathology," and founded the field of Social Medicine. More famous, because it was he who put an end to the search in the quest for the “missing link”!

His name is Dr. Rudolf Virchow whom Rizal met when Blumentritt introduced him....

A CALL TO ALL THE MARITON VICTIMS (Mariton Gedupeerden)
The Netherlands
Fri 23rd July 2010

More
On July 19, 2010 we should have flown to the Philippines for a much deserved vacation and a longed for reunion with my family and high school classmates from 35 years ago. We saved for this moment and looked forward to it. This dream like the dreams of so many others was abused and thrown away by a travel agent whom we have entrusted with the means to make this dream come true. Mariton Air Travel Philippines closed its doors due to an alleged bankruptcy. The owner, Ms. M.M.F., known to many as Tess, is nowhere to find. The bewilderment among the victims is unceasing. What happens now ? Is this true? Can I get my money back? What do I have to do? How could I be so stupid? This last question is the hardest to swallow for all of us. No, we are not stupid. We are victims....

Post Scripts from Madrid, Spain
Thu 15th July 2010

Last winter was my 17th in London and the most severe in so many years. The snow was relentless and I have never been so cold. I couldn’t leave the city because of a pressing job contract, so when I was not designing on my computer I was dreaming of sunny days lazing on a sidewalk café in Spain. The pictures on this spread were taken in Madrid back in May 2008 but the warm memories will linger for a long, long time and I am hoping for a repeat performance in the coming months.

2010 Mediterranean Cruise:Italy, Croatia, Greece and Montenegro
Mon 5th July 2010

More
Our road tours in Europe during the past years have been wonderful journeys of discovery and adventure. We wanted no less this time, especially for several members of this year’s much bigger tour group who have not seen Europe before.

There were 27 of us from 5 countries - 8 from the Netherlands (my sister Quiding and her husband Eddie, long-time friends Ton and Mellie, Angel and Nora, Ana and Margarita) 2 from Belgium:Dirk and Pat; 4 from the Philippines (my brother Danny and his wife Cindy, and Cindy’s sisters Annie and Bettina); 2 from Australia (Cindy’s sister Frieda and her husband Rico); and 11 from the United States (Cindy’s brother Arnel and his wife Ginny, Cindy’s cousin Kate and her husband Ito, my brother Boy, his wife Teng and their friends Ray and Zeny, my brother Jun and his wife Iou, and me.) To facilitate coordination and planning, we opted to go on another Mediterranean cruise, followed by a land tour that I asked my good friend Luca from Italy to organize for us.

Lhyanne’s down-heartening classroom experience had really put her down for several days. Her enthusiasm about “The Philippines” turned out to be like her favorite shooting star with that bright streak that had rapidly burned itself out. I silently watched her as she gathered the pile of undistributed pictures and put them in the trash bin. How my heart ached witnessing her as she painfully glanced at the objects she just threw away.

“Hey Lhyanne, did you know that there’s two more holidays left for this month? Isn’t that going to be fun, huh anak?”
